September 1, 1988: The Morning Update

 

I added twelve more ads today, from January and February 1988, plus five more Random Pages gallery additions, from The Blade. The first one is a Friday, 1/1/88 “Television by Tom Ensign” story in the Peach Section, “Means Of Handling Drug Problems Outlined On TV,” about a special on channel 30, Drug Free Kids—A Parent's Guide. It also includes other local television and radio items. Next is a Thursday, 1/28/88 Peach Section story, “Home Box Office Loves That Boxing,” about the 1/22/88 Mike Tyson—Larry Holmes fight. You'll find the TV Guide ad and “close-up” here. There's also a Sunday, 2/14/88 Blade Toledo Scope story, “'Morning Update,' Food Fair, 10K-Run, Outdoor Show Blade Offerings in 1988,” about The Blade's Instantnews service on the CableSystem. It includes a picture of Craig Mantey, updating road condition reports. Up next is a Thursday, 2/11/88 letter to The Blade from Mike Smythe, about the loss of Bill “Uncle Ben” Spencer and Terry Shaw. Bill Spencer (not to be confused with “Blizzard Bill Spencer”), died on 12/5/87. The 12/6/87 Blade was missing from the archives, or I would have posted his obituary, but you will find a related ad below. The last one is another “Television by Tom Ensign” entry, a Friday 2/19/88 Peach Section story, “Channel 36 Preparing Feast For Baseball Fans.” There's one addition to the Channel 11 gallery, a Thursday, 1/21/88 ad for the Super 11 Warehouse Sale at the SeaGate Centre. There's also one addition to the Channel 24 gallery, a Tuesday, 2/2/88 St. Vincent Medical Center ad for an appearance by Sue Parkins, M.D., on Geraldo Rivera's show, There's one addition to the Channel 36 gallery, as well, a Friday, 2/5/88 ad for the movie, “For A Few Dollars More” (Clint Eastwood). There are two additions to the Buckeye CableSystem gallery, a Saturday, 1/30/88 ad for The Morning Update on The Blade Instantnews on CabelSystem channel 11A, and a Thursday, 2/25/88 ad for All Creatures Great and Small on A&E, on channel 8A. There's also one addition to the Vintage Cable Ads gallery, a Thursday, 1/28/88 ad for HBO. There are four additions to the Radio Station Ads gallery, icluding a Wednesday, 1/13/88 ad for Mitch and Mary Beth on WKKO-FM 99.9 and WTOD-AM 1560. Next is a Tuesday, 2/2/88 ad for Paul Ellis on WSPD, followed by two ads for WGTE-FM 91.3 & WGLE-FM 90.7 (fm91), a Saturday, 2/6/88 ad for Piano Jazz, and a Tuesday, 2/9/88 ad for Afternoon Concert with Bill Gill.The last two ads today are additions to the Other Vintage ads gallery, including a Tuesday, 2/2/88 ad from the family of Bill Spencer, who appeared for years on channel 13 as Uncle Ben. As I mentioned above, he died on 12/5/87. The other one is a Sunday, 2/14/87 full-page ad for The Blade's Peach Section. And of course, Jerry Lewis Telethon ads are here.
