July 11, 2011: The Best Beer in Any Town!

I added 23 more ads today from June, July and August 1960, seven of them in the the Channel 11 gallery. There's a Saturday, 6/4/60 ad for "The Lustymen" on Hollywood Spectacular (Robert Mitchum), a Tuesday, 6/7/60 ad for a rerun of NBC's Goodyear Theatre "The Golden Shanty" (Errol Flynn, in his last performance), a Wednesday, 6/8/60 ad for "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" on Family Theater and a Saturday, 6/11/60 ad for "Clash by Night" on Hollywood Spectacular (Marilyn Monroe, Robert Ryan). There's also a Sunday, 6/12/60 ad for "The Americano" on The Big Show (Glenn Ford), a Wednesday, 6/15/60 ad for the special, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and a Thursday, 6/23/60 ad for the CBS special, The Secret World of Eddie Hodges. There's one in the Channel 13 gallery, a Sunday 6/19/60 ad for an ABC special hosted by James Cagney, Biography of The Fight (Ingemar Johansson, Floyd Patterson). There are ten more in the Radio Station Ads gallery including a Monday, 6/20/60 ad for the Johansson-Patterson fight, one of six WTOL-AM 1230 ads. There's another 6/20/60 ad for the Pepsi-Cola $1000 Treasure Hunt and four more for Doug Tabner's Buckeye Sports Final, a Tuesday, 7/12/60 ad, a Wednesday, 7/28/60 ad, a Monday, 8/1/60 ad and a Wednesday 8/3/60 ad. There are two WSPD-AM 1370 ads, a Monday 7/11/60 ad for their Democratic Convention coverage (Jim Uebelhart) and a Monday, 7/25/60 ad for their Republican Convention coverage. There are also two ads for "Toledo's newest radio station," WTOL-FM 104.7. There's a Friday, 7/15/60 ad and a Friday, 7/22/60 ad (Joe Weaver, Tom Josephson). In December, 1972 104.7 would become WIOT-FM. The last five ads are in the Other Vintage ads gallery. There's a Thursday, 6/16/60 full-page ad for Pepsi-Cola, a Friday, 6/17/60 full-page ad for Gulf Oil's $500,000 contest, a Sunday, 6/19/60 ad for Nestle's Strawberry Quick (Roy Rogers), a Thursday, 7/14/60 ad for Walford's Family Stores and a Friday, 7/15/60 ad for Sohio, "Welcome to Sohioland!" I believe this is the first time that the ads for TV were outnumbered by the other ads, because the TV ads in The Blade were really rare in the Summer of 1960 and because WTOL was advertising their radio stations more than usual. More vintage ads from the online archives of The Toledo Blade are on the way, including four for channel 13's Captain Cotton and Salty...
